HEARTS IN THE SAND is an Iraq war film written by Hamlet Sarkissian and Nathan Sanders.  It is currently being produced by HANDMADE FILMS (UK).

LOGLINE
Sonny Wheelwright went to war for all the right reasons. Now home from Iraq and beyond right and wrong, the young marine finds his entire world coming apart and crashing down around him. A dying Vietnam Vet inspires Sonny to reclaim his life and heal his wounded soul.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT
Sonny Wheelwright, an American son, served his country for all the right reasons. Although he fought courageously and was awarded a PURPLE HEART, his homecoming was anything but glorious. Soon after returning to his hometown in rural Georgia, a severe form of PTSD starts to infect Sonny’s heart and mind, causing him to re-live the horrors of the Iraqi war. Haunted by disturbing memories of his doomed FIRETEAM, Sonny seeks a new life in Los Angeles, where he encounters a real-life saint, Vietnam vet Al Mendoza, who has committed himself to helping the new generation of American veterans. Guiding the new veteran through the potholes of his wounded psyche, Al becomes a wise mentor to a battle-scarred Sonny.

Sonny soon meets Margo Avery, a beautiful young woman grieving the recent loss of her only son. United in pain when their eyes meet in a cemetery parking lot, yet illuminated by the power and magic of love, Sonny and Margo attempt to build a new life together. Their passionate new relationship proves anything but easy. In a terrifying dream/flashback sequence, Sonny nearly chokes his beloved Margo to death in his sleep as he re-lives his desperate, agonizing battlefield attempt to save his best friend, CPL JENKINS.

Imprisoned and haunted by the echoes of war – Sonny retreats to Georgia where he begins to live his life as a recluse. As time goes by and Sonny’s loving and supportive family struggles desperately to keep their son and brother alive. One thing is clear: If Sonny is going to make it – it will be nothing short of a miracle. And that miracle is love.

Finally it’s a new day. And with a new day a new life announces itself. Everything has changed, except Sonny Wheelwright is still an American Son.
